Government official in his native Egypt, and an adult convert to Christianity. First bishop of Béziers in Narbonense Gaul (in modern France), consecrated by Saint Paul of Narbonne, and serving in the mid-3rd-century.

  • bishop with a camel, indicating his origin in the North African deserts, and confusing his story with the other Aphrodosius; a papier-mâché, wooden or other sculpture of a camel was carried through the streets of Béziers as part of the procession on his feast day; the procession was abolished in the French Revolution, and the camel destroyed, but the custom resumed once the persecutions were over
  • bishop carrying his severed head; this is due to his confusion with the 1st century Aphrodosius who was reported to have been beheaded in the persecutions of Nero
