U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch has described an informal Independence Day dinner he hosted for Pope Leo XIV at his residence in Rome. Speaking with Italian media, Burch said the pope arrived at 7:30 p.m. on July 4, prayed with the ambassador's family, and shared a meal featuring American charcuterie, watermelon salad, Chicago-style hot dogs, apple pie, and gelato. Burch said Leo XIV approved of the menu. The pope arrived without aides or secretaries, accompanied only by two Vatican gendarmes. Burch said he invited Leo XIV to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States by hosting the first U.S.-born pope. The invitation was sent about two months before the dinner, and confirmation came about a month later. After relating a revolting tale of a career of vice on the streets and in the suburbs of Atlanta, Dora Rothstein and Corinne Wilson, two girls aged 14 and 16 years, stood unabashed in the recorder's court Saturday afternoon. Recorder Pro Tem Preston, shocked by their testimony, called for the parents of the prisoners. Two aged men and a woman stepped forward and stood before the judge. They were Mr. and Mrs. A. Today, Leo XIV appointed Monsignor Christian Würtz, 55, as Bishop of Eichstätt, Germany. Leo XIV again chose a canon lawyer. A native of Karlsruhe, he originally studied law at Heidelberg University before entering the seminary. He holds two doctorates - one in both civil and canon law (doctor iuris utriusque) and another in theology. He also served as rector of Freiburg's seminary. At 48, he was the youngest bishop in Germany when he was ordained auxiliary bishop of Freiburg in 2019. At 55, he now becomes the youngest diocesan bishop in Germany.
