The FBI investigated two priests and conducted surveillance connected to them. One belonged to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX); the other, his uncle, was associated with SSPX Resistance and had been ordained by Bishop Richard Williamson. Agents researched travel and credit-card records. FBI personnel in Boston surveilled the second priest at the airport, while Customs and Border Protection questioned him and searched his phone. Father Tony Lehmann, a former U.S. soldier, visited Hiroshima after the war and, deeply affected by its devastation, chose to become a “man of peace.” He later joined the Carthusians, living at Serra San Bruno, before becoming a Jesuit devoted to pastoral service. He was no “penitent pilot,” but a witness to Hiroshima who chose peace, prayer and service. Father Tony died of leukemia on March 8, 2002, aged 73.

German Church Cancels November Synodal Conference as Vatican Delays Approval: The first “Synodal Conference” of the Church in Germany, scheduled to take place in Stuttgart on November 6–7, has been postponed, Domradio reported on August 28. The main reason is that the statutes are still awaiting the necessary recognition from the Vatican. Hotel rooms that had been reserved for the November meeting have been cancelled. The president of the German Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Heiner Wilmer of Hildesheim, had already said in May that, given the ongoing review by several Vatican dicasteries, he no longer expected the Synodal Conference to begin in November.

On August 29, Pope Leo XIV became the first Pope to take part by boat in the procession for the Feast of Our Lady of the Lake in Castel Gandolfo. After celebrating the Eucharist at the Church of Maria Santissima del Lago, Leo XIV boarded the Falco together with the statue of Our Lady of the Lake and crossed Lake Albano in a 25-minute procession, accompanied by canoes and other boats. The tradition dates back to 1954 and was established to bring together the local community and those who lived and worked around the lake.
