The Rich Pay: Mexican Multimillionaire Carlos Slim who is second on Forbes’ list of the world richest people, will contribute to Pope Francis’ visit to Mexico through his telecommunication company Telmex. Other sponsors are the flag carrier airline Aeroméxico, the automobile manufacturer Chrysler, the Mexican bank Banorte and the Mexican Government because Pope Francis is also the head of a state.
Foreseeable Troubles: Although he was warned beforehand, Pope Francis wanted troublemaker Peter Saunders on the Vatican commission on issues of sexual abuse. But then Saunders ultimately asked Francis himself to show up on the commission and to defend his record on handling abuses. Therefore, the commission asked Saunders to take a leave of absence from their work. Saunders did not accept is now seeking a meeting with the pope.
Doctors of the Armenian hospital Yedikule Surp Pırgic appointed by the Turkish judiciary have checked the health conditions of the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, Mesrob II. They confirmed that he suffers from dementia, is not able to exercise his free will and needs an authorized guardian to make decisions in his stead. In 2008, it was announced that Mesrob was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and has since withdrawn from public life. The Turkish regulations, dating back to Ottoman times, allow to elect a new Armenian Patriarch only after the former titular has died.
Arrested: Italian police has placed 64-year-old Father Patrizio Benvenuti under house arrest. He is accused of defrauding investors of 30 Million Euro they believed would go into a humanitarian foundation. Benvenuti was born in Argentina and ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Genoa, Italy. He is a retired Italian military chaplain who lives on the Canary Islands. The inquiry identified nine accomplices and nearly 300 victims, most of them elderly people. The fraud was exposed by a nun who used to work for Benvenuti.
