EWTN’s online audience is scattered across numerous websites. Under Montse Alvarado, EWTN sought to bring much of its global news operation together under EWTNNews.com, presented as its new unified global news platform.
Yet seven months after its launch, EWTNNews.com does not appear in Cloudflare Radar’s global Top 100,000.
The result raises questions about how successfully EWTN’s costly consolidation has translated into digital reach - especially as Alvarado prepares to take charge of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication.
How Does Cloudflare Radar Measure Internet Traffic?
When a user enters a domain into a browser, the computer normally makes a DNS (Domain Name System) request to find the Internet address associated with that name.
Cloudflare operates 1.1.1.1, one of the world’s major public DNS resolvers. Millions of people and devices use the service, giving Cloudflare a large sample of which domains Internet users request.
Cloudflare uses these DNS observations for its Radar domain popularity rankings. According to Cloudflare, the metric attempts to estimate the relative size of the user population accessing a domain, rather than simply counting DNS requests.
Automated traffic is a problem: bots, servers and other devices also generate DNS requests. Cloudflare therefore applies filtering and statistical modeling intended to better approximate human usage.
